A Massachusetts man died in 2015 from eating an extreme amount of black licorice, medical professionals said Wednesday.
The unusual case was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, detailing how the male taken in a bag and half of the sweet every day for 2 weeks prior to his death.
Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which could deplete potassium levels and add to heart rhythm issues, physicians described.
” Even a percentage of licorice you consume can increase your blood pressure a bit,” stated Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The man had collapsed inside a junk food restaurant and died the next day. Physicians found he had precariously low potassium, which resulted in heart rhythm and other problems.
The Food and Drug Administration alerts consuming just 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks might lead to an irregular heartbeat.
Jeff Beckman, a representative for the Hershey Company, which makes the popular Twizzlers licorice twists, told the Associated Press that “all of our items are safe to consume and developed completely compliance with FDA policies.”
Beckman added all sweet “should be enjoyed in moderation.”
